  • Every perfect thing is threefold.

  • (Can this be translated as "Everything in threes is perfect"? This is the way I've always used it.)

  • Should we add it to mollusque's "excuses" list?

    May 23, 2011

  • Shouldn't this be omne trium perfectum (see the online Latin Dictionary)?

  • I don't remember, but while trinus is a valid Latin word (cf. trine), trius isn't and I can only imagine "trium" being the genitive of "tres" (3). But why genitive?

    May 23, 2011

  • Trium (genitive as in trium virorum) does seem to be an error that has crept in. Older books pretty consistently favour trinum. (Tritium in Google Books is a scanning error for italic trinum.) One source gives ternarium, which would I suppose be synonymous, as in the adverbs trini/terni. Annoyingly, Perseus is now filtered at work so I can't do the proper checking.

  • I found myself singing artoparts's comment in the tune of "Lucy in the sky with diamonds".

  • Thanks, Pro and Qroqqa, for the clarifications. Qroqqa, what did Perseus do (besides cut off Medusa's head, of course) to get himself filtered? Is it that potty mouth of his?

By the way, do you think English sayings, like "Good things come in threes" and "Third time lucky" could go back to this Latin expression? There is a comparable saying in Slovene: "V tretje gre rado", which means something like "third time lucky".

  • My Latvian grandmother told me it was good luck to sneeze three times in a row.

    May 23, 2011

  • By the way, can one of our Latin scholars answer's mariep's question, which started this whole thing: 'Can this be translated as "Everything in threes is perfect"?'

    May 24, 2011

  • I'm a three sneezer.
